We all want to be professional and successful in our daily jobs, but how do we get there? Just like any other profession, there are a few skills that we should master before we can enjoy success. Public Relations is a developing profession in South Africa, and we must equip ourselves with the necessary knowledge and skills to be the best. We highlighted five PR- skills that practitioners need to develop to thrive in the PR-industry.
1. Writing and reading
Writing is a given! Practitioners must educate themselves with the latest writing skills. The approach to press releases will differ from one client to the next according to the brand and its image. It is vital to train yourself to write in different styles and tones. A good writer is also a good reader. Challenge yourself to read different publications and news pieces. Reading fill our heads with new information and ideas that will come in handy for campaigns and projects. And you want to propose the best project ideas, right?
2. Think outside the box
Never limit yourself to the previous project you worked on. Even though you might think that it is the best you ever delivered, there is always room for improvement. Millions of ideas are generated around us and we should explore those opportunities. People are craving for something catchy, interesting and different. Stretch your mind and find the thing that makes your product unique. Extraordinary ideas don’t always have to be extreme, sometimes the simplest ideas with out of the box execution, works best.
Networking is not just attending cocktail parties. It refers to the socializing with others to exchange information and news. In this way, you build a strong base of professional or social contacts. This skill might be the one that should be first on our PR-lists. Nothing sells like people do. The days of relying on social media to get your name out there, are over. When you mingle with others you put yourself in an environment where you can learn and experience new ideas. It’s time to get working, networking!
4. Know what you don’t know
Be open and honest with yourself on the areas and topics that you have little or no knowledge of. We cannot be good at everything but we can equip ourselves with new and interesting knowledge to move forward. When you realise that you’re not thriving in a certain area, see it as an opportunity to learn and grow yourself. A setback can also be a comeback! Ask your co-workers to help you develop in those areas, you’ll be amazed how team members can assist each other to grow in diverse areas.
5. Attention to detail
Last but surely not the least, attention to detail. By this skill, we mean that you use thoroughness and accuracy when accomplishing a project. Not only does attention to detail contribute to the efficiency of a project, but also to its success rate. Attention to detail will help to reduce the potential for problems and shortcomings. It also ensures that you don’t have to return to projects because of the lack of detail and end up spending much longer time on the projects than you should have. By paying attention to detail you will take in a lot of information that can come in handy when planning a project.
